National IRO Manager Partnership e-Magazine

The National IRO Manager Partnership has produced this free e-magazine to support the work of its members. It offers professional news; good practice highlights; reflections on topical policy matters and links to articles to support continuous professional development as a IRO.

Comment on best practice

The difference made by IROs intervention is often cumulative – the result of little nudges and ‘challenges’ raised during critical points in a child’s care journey. IROs independence ensures that we do not directly ‘case manage’, so we are more able to step back and to look objectively at the impact of professional interventions. IROs crucial ability is to focus on the unique needs of each child to make sure that decisions drive improved outcomes for the child.

Below are various examples of best practice provided by IROs.

  1. Trilogy of short films by young people
  2. Child-centred reviews
  3. Do you know? Training
  4. Raising aspirations – multi-agency training tool “Charlie”
  5. IRO Consultation with Children Tool Kit
  6. Testimony from a young person on the interview panel to appoint a new IRO
  7. Stability and permanency for children
  8. Exit from care – supporting reunification
  9. Involvement of care leavers in the delivery of services
  10. Child-centred Care Planning and Review
